Born in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, I had a wonderful childhood and time at school. Left at 19 and joined the Royal Marines. I Qualified as a Physical Training Instructor and had a great time. Katrena and I married in 1983 and have three great kids. After 18 years service I was made redundant from the Marines.
Luckily I had been doing a bit of swimming teaching at Fort Stamford and the rest is history.
Today, apart from family life, most of my day is involved in the teaching, planning and organisation of the lessons.
I have passed several swimming teachers courses as qualifications have been changed endlessly. I qualified as an ASA tutor, and also taught Pool lifeguards for several years, before concentrating on teaching children.
I now concentrate and love the teaching of swimming to all ages. Funnily enough I couldn’t swim as a kid. I joined the Royal Marines with a 5m certificate and couldn’t pass out of training until I could swim. I went home on leave, got a book out the library, and taught myself to swim. The first time I swam more than 5m, I did a mile.
Katrena also helps out with the swimming. She attended a teachers course I held and we now work together. She is as enthusiastic as I am, we often talk about pupils and how to get the best out of them.
